Reading for Emergent Bilinguals
Emergent bilinguals have a different experience when learning how to read and write. Remember they all have different levels of literacy instruction. Some may know how to read and write in their native language and others may not have any prior literacy instruction. The purpose of literacy instruction is to make meaning from print.
When teaching literacy to emergent bilinguals, it's important to know what your students can and cannot do with reading. Because that is where you can plan for further instruction that will fit their needs. This involves teaching rich instruction that includes reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Which is reading a lot of different texts and providing opportunities for students to interact with one another and use language for real purposes. (using their native language and putting things in own words). Teaching reading is a balanced literacy approach, this when you balance students native language with English instruction. |
The Role of Home Language
Emergent bilinguals come into the classroom with their native language. Understanding that all students are unique as individuals and their language is something that makes them even more unique because we can help emergent bilinguals learn English by teaching content both in English and in their native language. Teaching in both languages can support comprehension and reading development such as reading which is bilingual instruction.
Common Core
The Common Core is a set of high-quality academic standards in mathematics and English language arts/literacy (ELA). These learning goals outline what a student should know and be able to do at the end of each grade. The standards were created to ensure that all students graduate from high school with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in college, career, and life, regardless of where they live. (Common State Standards).

Activities for Reading Development
Oral language activities
Before doing an activity or reading a story in class, teach pre-selected vocabulary words. This is always helpful, especially for ELLs. This will give them the chance to identify the word, place it in context, and remember it. You can pre-teach vocabulary by playing with words and using English as a second language (ESL) methods such as: (ColorinColorado)
Guided Reading Activity Through guided reading, students are able to decode and comprehend with books or any other reading material that allow ELL's to read engaging and interesting stories that contain content knowledge. Reading material can consist of Tier 1, 2, and 3 words. Guided reading also helps lower students affective filter when they read with a partner.
Checking for Comprehension Building ELL's comprehension skills allows them to read more accurately, identify important events and concepts in a text, master new content area concepts, and feel motivated to read in schools and for pleasure.
