Vocabulary
When emergent bilinguals enter a school they already have a fewer vocabulary of English words. That means that they have to learn new vocabulary while they are also learning content-area concepts in English at the same time. This makes it a challenge for them because they are constantly trying to master a great amount of vocabulary words. This can also interfere with their ability to read, access content-area text, and learn area content. The more vocabulary words emergent bilinguals know increases their ability to read, write, and speak in English.
Learning Vocabulary
Instead of the tradition activity of looking up the words in a dictionary and taught to memorize the word, there are multiple and creative lessons for students to learn vocabulary. This is when teacher's need to keen in their lessons/activities to be engaging for emergent bilinguals that will expand their vocabulary.
Learning new vocabulary will consist of Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 words. In Figure A, Tier 1 (basic vocabulary) are words that are used in everyday speech, they are learned through social communication with family and friends. Tier 2 (multiple meanings/high frequency) are words that high frequency words that used mainly in speech's and specific writing. And Tier 3 (subject related) are words that are uncommon in everyday conversations, these are used in content area's such as thesis or mitosis. Children who speak English as a first language enter kindergarten with a vocabulary of 3,000 to 5,000 English words, and they add approximately 2,000 to 3,000 additional words per year." |
